INTERVIEW: New Jersey artist Sean Cos Mason

Tell us a little about yourself?

Sean Cos Mason: My stage name is Sean Cos Mason. I grew up in Montclair, NJ.  At an early age my mother introduced me to different genres of music, from classical, jazz, disco, club, opera and more; through her “Music Appreciated” college course. When I got older, I wanted to learn more about the music; so, I signed up for a choral class at Mount side Middle school in Montclair. In my choral music class, we went to different schools to put on concerts. Right then and there, I knew my love for music had grown with a strong passion for learning more.

At the age of 17 years old, I began to attend local rap battles. From the age to 17 to 20, I had performed in multiple underground venues, and rap battles with my battle group called, “When Animalz Attack.”  I used to run rap battle leagues and pick a lot of New Jersey’s talent to go to perform worldwide. I was active in the hip-hop culture community.  Being exposed to a different level of the music world, I decided to become an artist.

How long have you been in the music industry?

Sean Cos Mason: I’ve been in the music industry since the age of twelve.

How did you get started in the first place?

Sean Cos Mason: I got started in the music industry at church.

How would you describe your sound?

Sean Cos Mason: I describe my sound to be more rock, Techno, drums, stair kicks and instruments.

Who are your inspirations in the music industry?

Sean Cos Mason: My inspirations in the music industry are Michael Jackson, Public Enemy, Bone Thugs N Harmony, Busta Rhyme, as one of his most significant influence.

How do you go about writing a song and what is your process?

Sean Cos Mason: I write my songs differently. I dream the lyrics, or I will write my music based on the beat I hear, or I write my song as it comes to me.

What are you currently working on?

Sean Cos Mason: I am currently not working on any new project at this giving time.

What is the concept behind your latest song or project?

Sean Cos Mason: The concept behind my last song Feel So Good is based on a woman I admired and wanted to get to know her better.

Any plans on touring to promote your latest project?

Sean Cos Mason: I am not currently planning to tour to promote my latest project as of yet. However, I have been promoting my music on music streaming and going to clubs.

What did you buy with your first check off music?

Sean Cos Mason: I used my first check for studio time, a photo shoot for my album cover and my music video for “Hands on the Wheel.”

What are must-haves when you’re in the studio working?

Sean Cos Mason: My must have in the studio is water when I am working and coming up with a dope beat to compliment my lyrics.

What is the best piece of advice in this business you actually followed?

Sean Cos Mason: My best advice in this business is to stay on your gin, stay focuses, loyal to the game, learn the finance of the business so you will not get robbed, and make sure you have a dominant team to back you up

Will you be collaborating with any other artists on this project or in the future?

Sean Cos Mason: No, I am not looking to collaborate with any other artist.

Do you think your music is mostly enjoyed more for the beats or for the lyrical flow and content?

Sean Cos Mason: My music is mostly enjoyed for the lyrical flow and content.

What area do you need to improve on in regards to your career? (Example: Better production, Delivery, Stage presence, etc.)

Sean Cos Mason: I truly need to improve my stage presence.

What’s your all-time favorite song?

Sean Cos Mason: My all-time favorite song is my song call “My World.”

In your opinion who is the most influential and successful artist in your genre today and why?

Sean Cos Mason: In my opinion, the most influential and successful artist is Cardi B, Meek Mill, Drake, J. Cole, and Kendrick Lamar.

Who has been some of your favorite artists that you’ve been able to work with?

Sean Cos Mason: I do not have any favorite artist I’ve worked with at this giving time.

Any dream award shows you hope to one day play at?

Sean Cos Mason: My dream award show I hope to have one day to work with is the BET (Black Entertainment Television) hip-hop award.

What is your primary goal as far as music?

Sean Cos Mason: My primary goal as far as music is to work on perfecting my song and more original dope beats.

Who would you say your music relates to the most?

Sean Cos Mason: I would say my music relates to the most is myself.

What separates you from other artists? (What’s makes you different?)

Sean Cos Mason: What separated me from other artists is my lyrical flow and my song content.

When you’re not in the studio, what do you like to do for fun and relaxation?

Sean Cos Mason: When I am not in the studio, I like to spend time with my favorite girl, and that is my mother. Or I want to go to parties with my best friends or sit in my room writing new music.

If you could work with any producer who would it be?

Sean Cos Mason: If I could work with any producer, it will be Mike WiLL Made-It and Boi-1da

What’s the biggest highlight of your career thus far?

Sean Cos Mason: The biggest highlights of my career thus far have my songs on all music streaming website and on the Indie Chart.

What is your dream venue to perform at?

Sean Cos Mason: My dream venue is to perform is the Super Bowl.

What artist music are you currently a fan of?

Sean Cos Mason: The artist I am a fan of is Drake and J. Cole.

When performing live what are some of the things you do to get the crowd involved?

Sean Cos Mason: When performing live I trying to get the crowd hypes up by asking them questions, wave their hands in the air as I am performing on the stage, choosing someone to come up on stage with me to sing a bar or two of my song.

When performing live and the crowd is singing along how does that energy make you feel?

Sean Cos Mason: When performing live, I get overwhelming with joy and positive energy to see my fans singing my music. I work hard to share with my fans.

What’s the name of the last book you read and by whom?

Sean Cos Mason: The last book I read was my mother’s book call Soulality “Fruit for Your Soul.”

What can we expect from you in the future?

Sean Cos Mason: I will leave it as a surprise.

Sean Cos Mason: Yes, I will like to add that music is the therapy that I can escape and be myself and explore my deep inner emotions.
