Dance music producer, DJ, remixer and record label boss Rod Carrillo, based in Phoenix, Arizona, is ready to drop his latest album, “Los Sonidos” on May 17th. The set of 10 tracks features Terri B!, Lisa Williams, Ralphi Rosario, Hoxton Whores, Reiss Harrison, Eric Redd and Kebab & Cream. The best part of almost any Rod Carrillo production is their uncanny ability to grow on you, stick in your head and stay there to the point that you just might find yourself humming the melody or bassline in the elevator, on the subway or pretty much anywhere you can think of. That’s pretty uncanny for electronic dance music, but it’s the way Carrillo weaves melody and rhythm into his tracks that makes them endlessly captivating. Rod is the undisputed master of his House and Latin blends that have been making huge waves since his debut many, many moons ago.
Since then, he has had several crossover Billboard hits, while focusing on remaining true to himself and developing his Carrillo Records production label. In doing so, he has satiated the underground collective and managed to maintain credibility through the sheer, undisputed quality of his releases.
Rod has rewarded his fans with a vast number of tracks and albums over the years, all of them damn near brilliant and with enough quality that you could literally pick any one of them out of a hat and drop them in a DJ set with a guarantee of the dancefloor going insane to his throbbing, melodic, familiar yet intensely original sound.
“Los Sonidos” follows suit, with two hands full of potential dancefloor hits, where the sonic quality is truly second to none. To hear these 10 tunes together for the first time is immensely satisfying.
“Latin Check”, which opens the album, takes a simple percussion and synth progression and sees it build and flex in complexity and intensity before finally kicking into the soulful anthem “You Got What I Need” ft. Terri B! By the time you hit onto the scintillating horn and rhythmic palette on “Trumpeta”, you realize that production-wise, this album stands out from its competition and that is where its beauty and value comes shining through.
This is melodic, progressive music at its absolute best; pick nearly any cut from this collection and unleash it on a packed dancefloor and the audience should be all smiles. From “Save Me” ft. Eric Redd, to “Alegre – Hoxton Whores Club Mix”, and “City Of Magic” ft. Lisa Williams, sonically, this album beats the pants off nearly anything else out there right now.
And that can be attributed to the time and effort Rod Carrillo has clearly spent mastering his production tools and his uncanny knack for creating melodic riffs and rhythms that ebb and flow, grow and regress and evolve throughout each track’s length and arrangement.
This album comes about as close to perfect as one could hope for, and the proof comes with further scrutiny of tracks like “A Thang”, “What You Want” ft. Reiss Harrison, “You Got What I Need” – Kebab & Cream Radio Mix, and “Alegre” – Ralphi Rosario Big Mix (Bonus Album Cut).
There aren’t many artists out there where nearly every tune they make is quality, instantly playable and instantly recognizable as the work of a true dance music mastermind. Carrillo has built a reputation and identity for himself, as a marquee act, and has laid a significant blueprint which is still in constant evolution.
On “Los Sonidos”, Rod Carrillo holds true to that identity, by representing all facets of his musical culture tastefully. We hope for more great things to come out of Carrillo’s studio and mind. And based on his convincing track record, we certainly will not be disappointed.
